Explore one of Britain’s most iconic natural wonders

Visiting Cheddar Gorge and Caves is a truly unforgettable day out in the heart of Somerset. As you arrive, the spectacular limestone cliffs rise up around you, creating a dramatic landscape that has taken millions of years to form. It feels like stepping into another world.

At the centre of your visit are two breathtaking showcaves that bring the story of the gorge to life.

Start in Gough’s Cave, the largest and most famous cavern on the site. Walk beneath towering formations of stalactites and stalagmites while your audio guide shares the cave’s extraordinary history, including how it once matured Cheddar cheese deep underground.

Then continue into Cox’s Cave, where a vivid multimedia experience guides you through the ancient forces that shaped the gorge and carved the caves across thousands of years.

Beyond the caves, you can climb the legendary Jacob’s Ladder, a staircase of 274 steps that leads to the Lookout Tower. From the top, enjoy sweeping views across the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels. If you fancy stretching your legs, a beautiful three mile cliff top walk loops around the gorge with wildlife, dramatic rock formations and panoramic viewpoints along the way.

History lovers can visit the Museum of Prehistory, home to fascinating artefacts that reveal how early humans lived in this landscape. You can also enjoy Beyond the View, a 270 degree cinematic experience that blends natural history, wildlife and human stories to help you understand the gorge on a deeper level.

Whether you love geology, history, hiking or simply soaking up incredible scenery, Cheddar Gorge and Caves offers a full day of discovery for visitors of all ages.

Follow signs for Cheddar village from the M5 or A371. The gorge is clearly marked by brown attraction signs.

Parking around Cheddar Gorge can be very limited, especially on weekends and during peak hours, so please arrive early to avoid delays. The main recommended car park is Cliff Street Car Park (BS27 3PT), a long-stay pay and display with all-day parking available, and there are several smaller car parks further up the gorge near Gough’s Cave and Cox’s Cave.

All parking is paid, usually around £6 for the day, and most car parks accept card, cash or PayByPhone. At busy times the gorge road can become congested and car parks fill quickly, so allow extra time for your journey and expect a short walk from your parking space to the entrance. Some areas have uneven terrain and steep gradients, so choose official car parks where possible.

Head to the Boundless registration point above Costa Coffee when you arrive, show your e ticket and collect your passes.
